When Kieran arrived at the hotel in London the next morning, he didn’t go in. Standing in the parking lot, he could see the tour bus at the back of the lot, which meant Miles was already there. His son was there. Still, he couldn’t bring himself to step into the lobby, even as the electric eye doors kept opening in welcome.

He backed away and walked down to the corner, retracing the path the cab had taken. They’d passed a park on the way and that was where he wanted to be. He missed the green pastures of his homeland, the smell of the garden in the morning mist. There was too much hustle here. Too much hustle since the night he’d landed in Brussels. Paris had been particularly stressful, not just because of the reason for his visit, but from the coldness of the people and the place.

As he crossed the street with two dozen others, he scolded himself for typifying an entire nation based on one experience. And it wasn’t that the nurses, or mortuary staff, or the airline had been rude to him. On the contrary, they’d all done their best to make the process as easy as possible, offering their condolences and understanding every step of the way. But still, there was a speed, a sharpness to which they worked that had left him feeling raw at the end of it all.

On the flight home, he found himself looking forward to returning to the familiar. Only it wasn’t his reading chair and tea biscuits back in Ireland, it was Liam and Miles and the dusty, musty scent of an empty club preparing for chaos. Strange, as he wasn’t a man who so easily adapted to the new. Not like Miles. He seemed to thrive on the adventure, new people, new surrounds, different languages, money and food.

He should take him to Leo’s Tavern in Meenaleck. That place had music built into the foundation. They could laze over a couple of O’Hara’s while listening to songs of the land. Maybe share a plate of drunken mussels with a loaf of crusty, fresh-baked bread.

Miles would soak that in and smile. Add a Celtic tune to his repertoire, perhaps honor the locals with a stripped-down performance. Just Miles, his guitar, and his honey-coated voice.

Kieran laughed when he remembered how much he’d despised the sounds pouring out of the band at the end of that first night. Loud. Harsh. Overly dramatic. But in Colchester, he heard Miles perform a couple of songs that were the opposite of all that. They were simple and heartfelt, and the tones wrapped around him like a hand-knitted scarf—both warm and lovingly made.

By the time Kieran reached the park, the crowd walking with him had thinned. Almost everyone moving on to offices and shops and restaurants, preferring to be indoors on what was turning out to be an overcast, chilly day.

Almost, but not all. A mom with three kids continued into the park, along with a man in a business suit.
